Civil Unrest in Tunisia

Facebook: Conversation with my friend who lives in Tunisia: (name changed for protection of identity) This conversation took place in real time while a civil uprising against the dictator in power who later left the country in disgrace but only after many people were killed and injured.  Now, at least, the people will have a chance at freedom in their country.

Message from Pakistan

January, 2011

My experiences on facebook have allowed me opportunity to connect with people from around the world.  This has been an educational process for me, and has opened my eyes dramatically to a world I never knew of.   The pictures of this world are often painted in blood and are shown to me through the mind and experience of another person who is experiencing a life on this earth quite different than myself.

The following is a facebook conversation I had with a new friend from Pakistan.  It is a glimpse into the world that most of Americans do not know about, a part of the world that lacks the freedoms we are so blessed with.   I will call him PK for protection. It begins with my response to his request to be my friend.

JMM: January 11 at 9:07am
Dear PK: I responded to your friend request however I like to know who I am corresponding with. I see you are a friend of  WF but I do not see a picture of you. Also, can you tell me what a Democratic Socialist is? because I despise Communism if that is anything like that? Thanks. Jeri
PK:  January 12 at 9:23am
Thanks Jeri for adding me.
I am an Afghan student studying Pol. science in Pakistan.
No 1 knows me here because my this account is for response to growing extremist community on f.b . So i cant add pictures. You may think i am coward but here is different world.
We feel threatened . You would have heard of Punjab Governor Salman Taseer.
And i dont want to die now...
My pol views change with time.
Democratic socialism is loose form of socialism and its practiced in some countries allowing private ownership and elected governments.
Regards

Oh my gosh, I'm sorry the world is so dangerous. I understand about your situation but I don't know who Salman Taseer is I will look him up.* I am American but the new people publish about us is not always accurate.

*note: ( I found that Salman Taseer was recently murdered in Pakistan,  shot 27 times by his own guard.)

you know our tolerance level is low and its better to be careful while talking on religion.
Anyhow its politics and our problem is that whole world is playing here and they are experimenting here otherwise these bunch of extremists would have been easily crushed.
The first mistake was made by U.S as they run to war without any planing and then supporting war lords whom we hate.
But we are entering with hope in 2011.
Thanks
Take Care

: yes, I understand our country made many mistakes, our leaders do not always listen to God when they make decision. But, most of our soldiers are young like yourself and follow their leaders out of love for their country thinking they are doing what is best for everyone. I don't believe our Country has any desires to conquer lands and people. For the most part, we are a freedom loving people. But I realize mistakes were made in knowing who to trust. For me, I don't know much about the politics of it all so I cannot speak with any type of knowledge or authority. I know that much is being done to reconstruct your country, I see the pictures and the videos. Howbeit, war is not pretty, people die, a lot of people die. I wish to God that was not so, for I am a humanitarian and love life and care for my brothers and sisters throughout the world. The only thing I know to do for peace is pray and hope. blessings of peace, always, jeri

Thanks a lot Jeri for sharing your good views. I know you are peace loving people and governments don't listen to people.
We are thankful and we must be thankful to U.S. A lot of work has been done and its never enough.
We feel bad about your soldiers when they die. But the are dieing for a cause and they will be remembered in history.
War and peace goes on in world.
Hope for the best.

Thank you so much, you have no idea what that means to me. So many people say we (Americans)are evil and we kill everyone, I know that we are not there to be evil. You are only the 2nd person that has said anything positive about the sacrifices of our soldiers. Thanks you from the bottom of my heart. jeri

The previous dialogue illustrates the fact that many people in the world live in constant danger, and the courageous among them put their life in peril to seek the freedoms most of Americans take for granted.  My reference to my friend about some hating America is a fact I recently become painfully aware of through the conversations with friends from other nations.

The airwaves and the internet is swollen with Propaganda about the United States.  We are blamed for everything that is wrong in the world, for every death and every war. It seems our enemies are skilled at making us look like the incarnation of Satan. In addition, Hollywood has given the impression that we are all stinking rich, arrogant, sex-addicted immoral  idiots.  I suppose, in parts of the world where people are unable to get the truth, sadly they believe the lies.  I know our country is not perfect, we have our portion of the evil, sick, hateful, people.  But the majority of the people are Christian, freedom loving people who only want to raise children, provide for their families, and contribute to the world to make it a better place, if only in their small communities.
